Straws made from plant-based materials like paper and bamboo have long been championed as eco-friendly alternatives to their plastic counterparts. They're often marketed as sustainable choices that help reduce plastic pollution in our oceans and protect the environment. However, a recent study conducted by environmental scientists at the University of Antwerp in Belgium has revealed a concerning truth: these seemingly green straws may not be as environmentally friendly as we thought. In fact, they may contain "forever chemicals" known as PFAS (poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances), which can harm both the environment and human health.

Harmful 'forever chemicals' found in 'eco-friendly' paper straws

The study, published in the journal Food Additives and Contaminants, involved testing 39 straw brands made from various materials, including paper, bamboo, glass, stainless steel, and plastic, for the presence of PFAS. The results were shocking, with PFAS being detected in a staggering 69% of the tested straws. These harmful chemicals were found in 90% of paper straws, approximately 80% of bamboo straws, 75% of plastic straws, and even 40% of glass straw brands.

Testing detected "ultra-short-chain" PFAS such as trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TFMS). These substances are highly water-soluble, potentially causing them to leach out of straws and contaminate beverages, according to the study.

Potential Health Risks

While the study's findings suggest that the concentration of PFAS in straws may be low, the long-term implications are concerning. These chemicals can accumulate in the human body over time, posing a potential risk to human health. "Small amounts of PFAS, while not harmful in themselves, can add to the chemical load already present in the body," warns Thimo Groffen, the lead researcher of the study.

The presence of PFAS in some plant-based straws highlights the complexity of sustainability. While reducing plastic usage remains vital, it's equally important to scrutinize alternative materials for potential drawbacks.

Straw Matters leads the way by providing PFAS-free straws that decompose within 4-6 weeks, mitigating long-lasting environmental impacts. This reassures consumers and emphasizes the importance of choosing eco-friendly options that prioritize both environmental sustainability and human health.

As more and more people become aware of the negative impact of plastic on the environment, the Canadian government has introduced a ban on single-use plastics in an effort to reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills and oceans. The regulation, which takes effect in 2022, includes items such as plastic straws, stir sticks, and cutlery. This means that businesses will need to find alternative options, such as biodegradable straws, to comply with the regulation. Biodegradable straws are made from materials that break down naturally over time, making them a more eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastic straws. However, with so many different types of biodegradable straws available on the market, it can be difficult to know which one to choose.

Types of Biodegradable Straws
There are several types of biodegradable straws available on the market, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Here are some of the most common types that are compliant with Canada's single-use plastic regulations:

Paper Straws: Paper straws are a popular choice for those looking for an eco-friendly alternative to plastic straws. They are biodegradable and compostable, and can be recycled with other paper products. However, they can become soggy and fall apart if left in liquid for too long.

Bamboo Straws: Bamboo straws are made from natural bamboo, making them a sustainable and biodegradable option. They are durable and can be reused multiple times, but may not be suitable for hot drinks.

Wheat Straws: Made from the stalks of wheat plants, wheat straws are biodegradable and compostable. They are a good option for cold drinks but may not be as durable as other types of biodegradable straws.

Plant-Based Straws: Plant-based straws are made from renewable plant fibers and are fully biodegradable and compostable. In the last few years, drinking straws have spent a great deal of time in the press and media spotlight. New health studies and environmental impact reports have revealed the dangerous impacts of plastic drinking straws. In fact, according to the Better Alternatives Now nonprofit, almost 7.5% of all plastic in the environment is from plastic straws and stirrers. Global governments soon took notice with the United Kingdom banning all plastic straws and Canada decreeing the end of all single-use plastics in 2023. Large corporations like McDonald’s and Starbucks followed suit, switching out the plastic straws across their stores.

So what exactly are governments and corporations using in place of plastic straws? Biodegradable straws. These straws are growing in popularity as a better alternative for consumers, businesses, and the environment.

You may be shocked to discover that climate change is no longer a political or moral issue. Now it's becoming as much one for business as environmentalism. The world economy, which depends on production from fossil fuels, must develop ways around this trend – reducing our emissions in order (to some extent) to mitigate its effects. But if we want to avoid catastrophic global warming, whether by investing heavily now in research into renewable energy sources or promoting green manufacturing through low-carbon transportation systems or switching one time used take out plastic from all restaurant industry to biodegradable by products, action to face this matter are in each individual hands from countries to businesses.

Some of the things you could do as a restaurant

In some parts of the world, governments have already banned plastic straws from being used in restaurants. As the restaurant industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the world and more people eat out and order take out more often, restaurants are generating a large amount of waste. There are many ways that restaurants can be more environmentally friendly. Some include reducing food waste, using biodegradable straws, and using compostable one-time-use containers when necessary.

1. Substitute single-use plastic with biodegradable material

The best way to make your restaurant environmentally friendly is to make it easy for customers by providing boxes and straws that are biodegradable and compostable. In an effort to go eco-friendly, restaurants are switching their one-time-use plastic to a more environmentally friendly material made of sugarcane, paper, bamboo, and all other biodegradable materials to substitute for the one-time used plastic.

2. Reduce food waste

Reducing food waste is the most well-known way to be environmentally friendly at a restaurant. Leftover food goes straight into the trash and as it decomposes it generates methane gas which contributes to climate change. Utilizing compostable takeout containers which can be conveniently disposed of with their food scraps at a recycling center or compost pile.

3. Replacing plastic straws with compostable straws

Restaurants should consider switching to biodegradable straws which eventually break down after use. Sugarcane straws are generally considered eco-friendly and economical because they do not require extra processing like bamboo or paper straws. They also have a good impact on the environment, as they produce less carbon emissions than plastic and can be recycled just like food waste.  Biodegradable straws have a number of benefits for both the restaurant industry as well as for the environment. They can be composted like other biodegradable products, and an average of about 500 billion paper or plastic straws are used each year.

4. Use eco-friendly cleaning products

Believe it or not, the most used product in a restaurant is cleaning products. Let’s face it, there are more restaurant cleaning products that are toxic than not, and the costs for environmentally friendly cleaning products are usually more expensive. However, not all environmentally friendly cleaning products are expensive if you look hard enough to make your restaurant more eco-friendly. When shopping around, look for the Green Seal label, Environmental Choice Program label, Greenguard label, or the Chlorine Free Products Association label.

5. Reduce the use of paper

As we are in a digital age now there are ways we could reduce the use of paper. For example, receipts can be sent to customers in digital format that reduce the use of printed paper. Many new POS systems allow you to send digital receipts and many people prefer having their receipts emailed to them instead of having a wallet stuffed full of paper. Additionally, try cutting your paper advertising and moving your efforts online.

Conclusion: Going Eco-Friendly is a Must for All Restaurants

There are many reasons for restaurants to go eco-friendly. From the recent banning of one-time use plastic from the Canadian government, effective end of 2022, to just surely being environmentally conscious. But at the end of the day, it is about promoting your business and demonstrating that you care about the environment. You will have more customers in this day and age, and millennials are paramount to your success. When considering going green, there are many things worth considering; one thing to keep in mind is what customers want.

It is important that you work on implementing sustainable practices as a restaurant owner or manager, as these practices will help you grow your business while also going in line with environmental regulations. Implementing sustainable practices can be costly at first but these investments will pay off in the long run by providing a means of reducing operating expenses, helping generate revenue through increased customer visits, and supporting local economic growth through expansion opportunities.

You might have heard about how plastic bottles pollute our planet. But did you know that drinking straws also contribute to plastic pollution? Plastic material products do not degrade at all. Many studies have proven that plastic cannot break down for over 100 years. It means that even if they were disposed of properly, they would still remain in our water systems forever. If we are looking to avoid the use of these products, then we need to start using natural alternatives instead.

What are Compostable Straws

Compostable Straws are biodegradable and made from natural materials like corn, sugarcane, wheat, rice, and potato starch. They break down into smaller pieces over time. When composting, carbon dioxide (CO2) is released into the air, and oxygen is consumed. Carbon is turned back into carbon dioxide, while oxygen turns back into the water. However, unlike plastic straws, compostable straws don't just degrade; they completely decompose, leaving behind nothing but carbon dioxide and water vapor (H2O).

Once Compostable Straws fully decompose, less trash ends up in landfills, waterways, oceans, or even in our food supply. Using reusable and biodegradable products reduces the amount of waste produced and reduces plastic pollution, especially single-use plastic straws. These straws are designed to break down naturally and not end up in our oceans if disposed of properly. Many countries have started banning one time used plastic straws because of their negative environmental effects. Compostable straws help us take a step towards reducing plastic waste.

The Pros & Cons Of Compostable Straws

There are different types of compostable straws available to purchase in the market. You can choose between bamboo, sugarcane, corn, and more. However, when considering replacing plastic straws, many have chosen paper straws as their primary alternative because of their price. But what if I tell you that paper straws are only sometimes the best option?

Paper drinking straws may not be sturdy enough to handle liquids

Paper straws are paper, so if they are placed in liquid, they will get soaked no matter how much coating they have. Once the paper straws are soaked, they are completely unusable in just a few minutes. This is because the walls of the straw started sticking together, and drinks couldn't get through. It will begin to bend and fold into your drink.

A report of young children nearly choking after drinking from paper straws. Wet paper straws can become soft, which can cause parts to fall off and form clumps that are difficult to swallow and can lead to choking.

Luckily, in Canada, we have a wide variety of plant-based straws available in the market besides paper straws. They are available in different shapes and sizes to meet each person's needs, from standard drinking straws to bubble tea straws. It is yours to discover and take the initiative to change for the better.

To understand if sugarcane straws are edible, we must first understand what sugarcane is for and what remains of it after production. Sugarcane stalks have been used since ancient times as an addition to the human diet. They were even used to make paper and are still being used today. Sugarcane is a grass species native to tropical regions and has been cultivated for thousands of years. Today, it's widely used for food, fuel, and biodegradable byproducts.

There are two terms for sugarcane: sucrose cane and cane molasses. Molasses comes from the juice extracted from sugarcane after refining, while sucrose cane is refined sugar cane. Because sugarcane requires much less water than traditional crops like wheat, barley, and rice, farmers worldwide are turning to sugarcane as a primary cash crop. Over 100 million tons of sucrose cane are produced annually, making it the third-largest commercial crop in the world.

After processing for their original purpose, the remaining sugarcane is used to produce a variety of byproducts that include but are not limited to fuel and sugarcane straw. The fibrous material leftover after extracting the juice from it consists of about 50% cellulose, 35% hemicellulose, 7% lignin, 1% pectin, 2% ash, trace amounts of protein, fat, minerals, vitamins, and dietary fiber.

Many questions arise from determining if such products are edible, the answer is no, but they can be fully composted and biodegradable within 3-6 months, and the products are safe for your drinks.

Drinking Straws Buyers Guide -How do we select and choose the perfect biodegradable straws out of all the varieties of straws?

Step 1. Straw Material

As Canada moves forward with our no-plastic regulation that will take effect starting at the end of 2022, there is still enough time to research and select the best straw material to replace your current plastic straws. Furthermore, having the right material for the straws is strongly related to a customer's experience with their drinks and the durability of the straws. Depending on the material, the straws can be categorized into two types, single used disposable straws, and reusable straws.

Step 2. Straw Type

Step 3. Choose Supplier

When searching for suppliers, supporting local businesses is strongly recommended. It not only reduces your carbon footprint but helps in local economics. However, there are a few things you would like to consider when searching for compostable single-use plastic alternative straws. First is the quantity of straws that is required for your business. Second, understand the manufacturing process of the straws. When swapping to a new material, some customers may be interested in knowing more about the straws. Understating a little information is always helpful during this type of situation. Plus, it provides peace of mind when serving your customer since you understand what goes into making the product. Lastly, understand the length it takes for the products to decompose.

What is The Government of Canada doing to Protect the Environment?

The Government of Canada has always been actively involved in environmental-related activities. A recent event was on June 22, 2022, where the Single-use Plastics Prohibitions Regulation was announced. This regulation aims to reduce and eliminate environmentally problematic situations that harm and danger wildlife. Furthermore, to achieve zero plastic waste by 2030.

Which single-use plastics are being banned?

• Straws

Each day, up to 16 million plastic straws are used in Canada, and in many situations, the requirements of straws are not necessary for customers when consuming their beverages. Furthermore, in 2019, large companies such as Starbucks and Tim Hortons designed "strawless" lids that make it easier to consume beverages without a straw.

Reusable and biodegradable drinking straws are available in the market in various materials, including sugarcane, bamboo, paper, glass, stainless steel… the list goes on.

• Checkout bags

Around 15 million single-use plastic bags are used in Canada annually. However, in 2021 statistics Canada found that 96% of households had already started to use their own bags. Furthermore, some companies left single-use bags behind before the regulations came into force.

• Plastic cutlery

Plastic cutlery is primarily associated with takeout meals. However, plastic cutlery is often not required or desired when takeout meals are consumed at the customer's residence. Alternative materials are available in the market as well.

• Plastic food service ware

Encouraging customers to bring their own containers or developing a deposit and refund system for reusable containers is one option that would reduce the use of single-use plastic food ware.

Who is this regulation targeted?

This regulation targeted businesses and organizations providing single-use plastics, including manufacturers, importers, distributors, and retailers of single-use plastic items. As well as businesses like grocery stores, pharmacies, hotels, restaurants, and any organizations that provide single-use plastics to the public to eat, drink or carry their purchases.

As the regulation does not take effect until December 2022. Taking the initiative to reduce your company's environmental impact by replacing your single-use plastic, such as plastic straws, plastic bags, and plastic wares ahead of time can improve your company's sustainability and create business competitiveness.

How long do plastic straws decompose?

Plastic straws can take anywhere between 100-500 years to decompose and are much harder to recycle than other types of plastic. Most people do not realize that these plastic straws are actually made from fossil fuels. While there are claimed to be biodegradable and compostable, plastic straws but they can not fully decompose in any way. Instead, they break down into smaller pieces that may leach chemicals into the water supply, putting us at risk for cancer. Furthermore, when plastic straws end up in landfills, they add to the problems associated with fossil fuels. On average, landfills only decompose 50% of their material each year. Additionally, the production of plastic straws requires lots of petroleum-based products.

Are paper straws better for the environment?

When thinking about natural alternatives to plastic products, paper straws have been popping up everywhere. The first thing to know about paper straws is that they are not just a “green” option to plastic straws. Paper straws are indeed biodegradable and compostable, but the process of making them requires a lot of energy and results in the emission of greenhouse gases. In addition, the production of paper straws leads to the destruction of forests. That said, paper straws do provide some advantages over plastic ones. Unlike plastic straws, these materials won’t end up leaching harmful chemicals into our water supply. However, anyone who previously used paper straws for their beverages would have noticed that they do not last long when in contact with anything that is watery. As it becomes soggy the straws themselves affect the drink negatively.

Are sugarcane straws biodegradable?

Sugarcane straws are natural and biodegradable alternatives to plastic ones. A sugarcane straw takes on average 3-6 months to decompose. These straws are grown using traditional farming methods, without pesticides or any other harmful chemicals. They are made from sugarcane fiber(bagasse) extracted from the sugar manufacturing process and served as a direct replacement for petroleum-based plastic straws. Furthermore, sugarcane straws can last in a beverage for several hours, even lasting days in some cases.

As people continue to be more environmentally conscious, municipalities are taking action in banning these straws from restaurants and retail locations in an effort to reduce waste. This will hopefully make plastic straws disappear from our environment and landfills sooner rather than later.
