Switching away from plastic straws has become a priority for many restaurants, cafés, and food-service businesses. Paper straws are one of the most common alternatives, but their true cost goes beyond the price per straw.
From durability and customer experience to sustainability, businesses should consider the full impact of their straw choice. Here’s how paper straws compare with plant-based compostable alternatives and what to consider when choosing the right straw for your business.
Generally, both paper and compostable straws can have a higher upfront cost than conventional plastic straws. Pricing varies depending on the material, supplier, order volume, and product specifications.
For businesses, however, price per straw isn't the only cost to consider. Durability can also affect the overall value. If a straw softens or loses its structure before a customer finishes their drink, replacement straws may be needed, potentially increasing usage and affecting the customer experience.
When comparing paper, plastic, and compostable straws, businesses should consider:
Paper naturally absorbs moisture, which means some paper straws can soften after being exposed to liquid for an extended period.
This can be particularly noticeable in beverages that take longer to consume, such as iced coffee, cocktails, smoothies, and other cold drinks.
For businesses, this can create a frustrating customer experience. Customers may need a replacement straw, or the straw may become difficult to use before the drink is finished.
Plant-based compostable straws offer another option for businesses looking for a paper-like, plastic-free straw with greater durability. Straw Matters straws are made from plant-based fiber derived from agricultural byproducts and blended with wood pulp. They are designed to maintain their structure in both hot and cold beverages without the soggy experience commonly associated with traditional paper straws.
Paper straws are often chosen as an alternative to conventional plastic, but sustainability depends on more than simply whether a product contains paper. Materials, manufacturing, coatings, transportation, disposal infrastructure, and end-of-life conditions can all affect a straw's environmental impact.
The same is true for products marketed as biodegradable or compostable. Businesses should look for clear information about what the straw is made from, how it has been tested, and the conditions required for disposal or decomposition rather than relying on environmental claims alone.
Straw Matters straws are plastic-free and PLA-free and are made using plant-based fiber. Our products have undergone compostability testing, including ASTM D6400 and CMA compost field testing.
Not every sustainable straw is made the same way. Material, durability, disposal requirements, and beverage compatibility can vary significantly between products.

Plastic straws are a significant contributor to plastic pollution. Each day, millions of plastic straws are discarded after just one use, with many ending up in landfills or oceans. In the context of bubble tea, the wider plastic straws designed for sipping tapioca pearls make the issue even more pressing. These straws can take hundreds of years to break down, releasing harmful microplastics into the environment as they degrade.
The plastic pollution crisis is alarming, with reports suggesting that 500 million straws are used and discarded daily in the U.S. alone. Much of this plastic waste ends up in the ocean, affecting marine life and ecosystems.
Many people have switched to paper straws in an attempt to reduce plastic waste, but paper straws come with their own set of challenges.
Unlike paper straws, compostable straws from Straw Matter maintain their durability throughout the entire drinking experience. Made from 100% plant-based materials, these straws decompose naturally within 4-6 weeks, leaving no harmful residue behind.

Canadian communities are taking various steps to reduce plastic pollution, despite facing challenges such as a federal ban on six types of single-use plastics currently under legal scrutiny.
Local Bans and Policies
Cities like Montreal and Banff are leading the way with significant measures. Montreal implemented a broad ban on single-use plastics in March 2023, targeting items such as plastic straws, cups, stir sticks, and polystyrene containers. This policy has been effective, achieving a 92% compliance rate within the first year and issuing fewer than 40 tickets for violations.
Banff has introduced an ask-first policy for items like plastic straws, ketchup packages, and cutlery, meaning these are only provided upon customer request. This policy aims to reduce unnecessary waste by ensuring that these items are only used when absolutely needed. Additionally, Banff requires restaurants to use reusable dishware for dine-in customers, further reducing plastic waste.
Challenges and Repeals
However, not all efforts have been successful. Calgary's council voted to repeal its ask-first bylaw and bag fees shortly after their implementation due to significant public pushback. The bylaws, aimed at reducing single-use plastics, faced resistance from both businesses and the public, leading to their repeal before they could take full effect.
Similarly, Vancouver repealed a 25-cent single-use cup fee after it was deemed ineffective. The fee, intended to discourage the use of disposable cups, faced criticism for not significantly reducing cup usage. Additionally, the fee created challenges for vulnerable populations, such as homeless individuals who struggled to afford even a small fee for a cup of water.
Looking Forward
The next steps in addressing single-use plastic pollution involve continuous innovation and adaptation. Communities must explore a variety of approaches, from policy changes to public education campaigns, to reduce plastic waste effectively. Governments at all levels, businesses, and the public must work together to develop and implement strategies that prioritize long-term environmental health over short-term convenience.
In conclusion, while challenges remain, the efforts of cities like Montreal and Banff demonstrate that it is possible to make significant strides in reducing plastic pollution. By learning from these successes and addressing the obstacles encountered by other cities, Canada can continue to lead the way in creating a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.

In Canada, the movement to combat single-use plastics, including plastic straws, is rapidly gaining momentum. While there isn't a federal law specifically addressing plastic straws, provinces, municipalities, and businesses are stepping up to champion a more sustainable future. Here's how they're leading the charge:
Provincial and Municipal Bans: From coast to coast, provinces and cities are taking action to reduce plastic waste. British Columbia, for instance, is set to ban single-use plastics by 2023, potentially including plastic straws. Cities like Vancouver and Montreal have already taken the lead with bans or restrictions, encouraging the adoption of alternatives like paper, compostable, or reusable straws.
Corporate Policies: Many Canadian businesses and food service providers are proactively implementing policies to tackle plastic straw usage. Fueled by growing consumer demand for sustainability, major chains and cafes are committing to phasing out plastic straws or providing them only upon request. This shift reflects a broader corporate responsibility movement towards environmental stewardship, especially in the realm of restaurant supplies.
Consumer Awareness and Education: Public awareness campaigns play a crucial role in shifting consumer behavior. By educating the public about the environmental impact of single-use plastics and promoting alternatives like paper, compostable, or reusable straws, there's a groundswell of support for more sustainable choices.
While there isn't a national law specifically targeting plastic straws in Canada, the collaborative efforts of provinces, municipalities, businesses, and consumers are driving change. This comprehensive approach underscores a growing recognition of the urgent need to address plastic pollution and promote environmental sustainability nationwide.
As we navigate Canada's plastic straw landscape, let's explore eco-friendly alternatives:
Paper Straws: Biodegradable and increasingly prevalent in cafes and restaurants, paper straws offer a sustainable alternative to plastic. However, it's important to note that paper straws can have drawbacks. One common issue is that they tend to get soggy after prolonged use, potentially affecting the drinking experience. Moreover, some paper straws may contain chemicals used in their manufacturing process that could potentially pose health risks to humans. As such, while paper straws are generally considered a more eco-friendly option than plastic, consumers should be aware of these potential concerns.
Compostable Straws: Crafted from plant-based materials such as Agave, sugarcane, wheat, and other biodegradable sources, compostable straws naturally degrade, minimizing their environmental impact. However, it's crucial to keep in mind whether they are PLA (polylactic acid) free. Some compostable straws contain PLA, a bioplastic derived from corn starch, which may not degrade efficiently in all composting environments
Reusable Straws: Durable and dishwasher-safe, reusable straws made from stainless steel, silicone, or bamboo provide a lasting solution to plastic waste.
Together, through provincial bans, municipal initiatives, corporate policies, and individual choices, Canada is paving the way towards a plastic-free future. So, the next time you enjoy your favorite beverage, choose sustainability and join us in making a difference, one straw at a time!

Over the past few years, the growing demand for sustainable alternatives to plastic straws has led to the emergence of compostable straws as an environmentally friendly solution. However, ensuring alignment with local regulations and obtaining relevant certifications is pivotal for making a genuine positive impact on the environment. By delving into the intricacies of regulations, certifications, and available sustainable options, you can make well-informed decisions regarding compostable straws, contributing to a more sustainable future.
Meeting Industry Standards and Certifications for Compostability
When sourcing compostable straws, careful consideration of industry standards and certifications validating compostability claims is crucial. The Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) stands out as a widely recognized third-party certification program that authenticates the compostability of products and packaging materials. Notably, straws meeting the ASTM D6400 standard are more likely to break down effectively in composting environments, resulting in a lower environmental impact. The CMA compost field test, conducted by the Compost Manufacturing Alliance (CMA), evaluates the breakdown and degradation of compostable materials in real-world conditions. Observing the material's decomposition rate and its impact on the compost, the CMA compost field test provides valuable insights, ensuring the proper compostability of selected compostable straws.
